Elder Maya Ndubuigbo

EARLY LIFE

Elder Maya was from Okija in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. He became known in the Nigerian film industry as a reliable character actor specializing in elder and traditional roles.

CAREER

Elder Maya was a veteran of classic Nollywood, particularly the video-film era of the 1990s and 2000s. He frequently played roles as elders, chiefs, priests, medicine men, grandfathers, or traditional figures (often credited simply as “Elder Maya”). Notable credits include: Battle of Musanga (1996) and its sequel – Grandfather Died Wretched (1998) – Elder Igodo (1999) – Amadioha’s Priest Cursed from Beyond (1999) – Papa Azuka Crazy Twins (1999) Valentino (2002) – Gideon Final Whistle (2000) Official Fracas (2006) – Market Man City of Kings (2006) Forces of Nature (2006) Across the River (2006) Battle of Indemnity series (2006–2007) Kingdom Apart (2007) – Chief Priest Husband My Foot (2008) Later credits such as Obidike (2022, Chief Priest; possibly posthumous or archival). He appeared in numerous other titles typical of the era, often in supporting but memorable elder roles. Colleagues and commentators noted his depth of emotion and professionalism despite limited leading opportunities.

PERSONAL LIFE

Njubuigbo was married and had at least one son. He was survived by his family. During his prolonged illness, he received public support, including financial assistance of ₦1 million from Pastor Joshua Iginla of Champions Royal Assembly in Abuja for treatment of his liver-related ailment. Fellow actors such as Bruno Iwuoha were involved in raising awareness and support. He was described by colleagues as amiable, jovial, hardworking, and a fine character interpreter with impeccable diction.

Martins Njubuigbo died in late September 30th, 2016 after a prolonged battle with a liver-related disease (he had been bedridden at points due to complications such as swollen legs). His death was confirmed by his son and announced by fellow actor Yomi Fabiyi, with tributes from Segun Arinze, Rita Edochie, Pete Edochie, and others in the industry. His funeral was held in early January 2017 at Saint Jude Catholic Church in Umidiji, Ubahu, Ugwuckaiku, Okija, Anambra State. He is remembered as one of the under-appreciated veterans of classic Nollywood whose consistent character work helped define the traditional and elder archetypes in many films of the period.
