Biography
EARLY LIFE
Douglas Jack Agu, known professionally as Runtown, was born on August 19, 1989, in Enugu, the capital city of Enugu State, Nigeria. He also spent significant parts of his childhood in Abuja and Lagos State, where he finished his primary education. Following the death of his father at a young age, he moved to Abuja with his mother, who was working in the Ministry of Health. Runtown developed an early passion for music, art, and academics, absorbing genres like reggae, R&B, highlife, and hip-hop. Runtown completed his primary education in Lagos and attended St. Augustine’s Seminary in Ezzamgbo, Enugu State, for secondary school. Later, he moved to Abuja to further pursue his music interests. Eventually, he relocated to New York City to study Fashion Management at a fashion school, where he broadened his cultural and musical horizons through exposure to the international entertainment community.
CAREER
Runtown officially began his music career in 2007, when he and longtime collaborator Phyno relocated to Lagos to pursue their careers. The duo stayed with J. Martins and contributed to his second studio album, with Runtown not only collaborating but also producing several songs. Through J. Martins, he connected with Timaya, who became a mentor and played a significant role in his growth as an artist. In 2011, Runtown officially launched his career by releasing his debut single, “Party Like It's 1980”. In 2014, Runtown released “Gallardo” featuring vocals from Davido. The track served as the lead single from his debut studio album, Ghetto University, and achieved commercial success, winning the “Best Collaboration of the Year” award at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. On November 23, 2015, Runtown released his debut studio album titled Ghetto University via MTN Music Plus through Eric Many Entertainment. On November 4, 2016, Runtown released the ballad “Mad Over You”, which charted at number 38 on the Billboard Twitter Top Tracks chart. In 2018, Runtown established his record label, Soundgod Music Group, after leaving Eric Many Entertainment due to contractual disputes. Under his label, Runtown continued to release songs, including singles like “Unleash,” featuring Fekky, and “For Life.” In 2019, Runtown released the EP Tradition, which received critical acclaim for its production quality and Runtown's lyrical prowess. On December 16, 2022, Runtown released the 'Signs' album. Runtown is renowned for his versatility, effortlessly fusing Afrobeats with international sounds, exploring themes of love, success, and African pride, presented through catchy rhythms and smooth melodies.
PERSONAL LIFE
Runtown has a son, Zamar, with American model and actress Selena Leath. He was also previously in a high-profile relationship with South Sudanese-Australian supermodel Adut Akech, which ended in 2021. In 2017, Runtown became embroiled in a high-profile legal dispute with his former label, Eric-Manny Entertainment. The label accused him of breaching contract terms, while Runtown counter-claimed unpaid earnings and exploitation. The legal battle was drawn out with court injunctions that sought to restrict his performances and music releases. In 2018, Runtown co-founded We Are New Africa (WANA), an initiative dedicated to empowering African youth through education and the arts. He is a vocal advocate for African creativity, self-reliance, and youth empowerment. Runtown divides his time between Nigeria and the United States, known for his luxurious lifestyle, upscale properties, and love for art and fashion.
