Biography
EARLY LIFE
Daniel Obasi's first introduction to the arts was as a graphics design intern at a security company in 2012. While in university, where he studied Language, Obasi developed an interest in fashion and the societal perception of gender roles and masculinity.
CAREER
In 2017, Obasi created his first major film and editorial work, 'Illegal Project', focusing on gender non-conforming expressions in an African context. This launched his career as a Nigerian artist challenging societal ideals on sexuality, masculinity, and gender roles. His aesthetic is described as whimsical, soft, ethereal, and Afrocentric. His 2018 Afrofuturism film, 'An Alien in town', pays homage to old African cinema and advocates for Africans to control their narratives. His latest film, 'Udara', uses fantastical storytelling to explore Igbo culture and the relationship between Christianity and traditional beliefs. Obasi has worked as a stylist and director on music videos for artists like Major Lazer, Burna Boy, and Falana, and collaborated with brands such as Orange Culture, Iamisigo, Maxivive, Rayo, Vlisco, and Miu Miu. His work has been published in Modelsdotcom, ID Magazine, Nataal Media, Garage Magazine, and others. His film 'An Alien in Town' was shortlisted for the Fashion Film Festival Milano and Bucharest Fashion Film Festival, and shown by the Smithsonian Center at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
PERSONAL LIFE
Obasi's work is deeply concerned with advancing African narratives visually, and he has been drawn to fantasy and alternate realities since childhood. He is known for exploring themes such as sexuality, masculinity, beauty, cultural symbolism, Afrocentric fantasy, and human relations.
