EARLY LIFE

Chukwu Martin, whose full name is Martin Nwachukwu (also known as Uzo'Chukwu Martin or Martin 'Chukwu), was born on 27 July 1991 in Imo State, Nigeria, specifically with roots in Owerri. He is Igbo by tribe and grew up in a Christian family. His parents are Mr. Leo Nwachukwu and Mrs. Perpetua Ego Nwachukwu, who married in 1973. He has a sibling named Christina Nwachukwu. Martin attended St. Francis Catholic Secondary School between 2002 and 2008. From a young age, he showed interest in the arts, which led him to pursue formal training in theatre. He later moved to Ibadan, where he studied at the University of Ibadan, earning both a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and a Master’s degree in Theatre. This strong educational foundation in theatre shaped his experimental and improvisational approach to storytelling. His early life in Imo State and academic journey in Ibadan gave him a deep appreciation for cultural narratives, human emotions, and community-driven art, which became central to his work as a filmmaker and curator.

Chukwu Martin is a multi-talented Nigerian actor, director, producer, voice actor, and curator renowned for his experimental and “rough play” style of filmmaking. His work blends improvisation, minimalism, theatrical elements, and raw social commentary. He explores taboo themes, societal dynamics, the human condition, identity, trauma, loneliness, and the struggles of everyday people and artists. As an actor, he gained notable recognition for his lead role as Muna Nwokoye in the 2023 movie Masquerades of Aniedo (alongside Chizitaram/Uche Nwoko). Other acting credits include Riona (2021), A Green Fever, and appearances in various projects. He has also worked as a voice actor. As a director and filmmaker, Martin is celebrated for his distinctive indie and experimental approach. Key projects include: Mr. Gbenga’s Hard Drive (2021/2022) — An improvisational narrative set against the EndSARS protests, told in “rough play” style. We Are Not Men Anymore (2023) — A feature-length improvisational piece probing masculinity. Altar Boys (2021) — Reflects on youth, bullying, and peer pressure. GUY (2025) — An experimental limited indie web series on identity, isolation, loneliness, and the emotional struggles of a modern artist. It blends theatrical elements with social commentary and was developed collaboratively. We Danced & Danced (completed 2025) — A feature-length play exploring trauma-bonding, parental negligence, love, neglect, freedom, and belonging. Martin served as director, writer, producer, and story creator. It runs about 1 hour 46 minutes and features actors like Jessica Gabriels Ujah and Timilehin Ojeola. Martin is also a passionate community builder. He is the founder of the Film Rats Club, an initiative focused on practical training, film curation, and pushing creative boundaries through hands-on exercises. He curates The Junkyard, an exhibition hub for creatives in Ibadan, and has been involved in the Ibadan Indie Film Awards and open mic screenings. His work emphasizes independent cinema, collaboration, and creating spaces for emerging filmmakers in Nigeria. Chukwu Martin is a devoted family man and a practicing Christian. He is married to Mrs. Nwachukwu, and together they welcomed their first child — a son — in August 2023.
