EARLY LIFE
Bilkisu Funtuwa was born around 1960 in Funtua, Katsina State, Nigeria. She was raised in a culturally conservative Hausa Muslim community and observes purdah as a married woman. She completed her primary education at St. Louis Primary School in Kaduna and her secondary education at St. Louis Secondary School, also in Kaduna. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hausa Literature from Bayero University in Kano.
CAREER
Bilkisu Funtuwa entered the literary scene in 1983 with the publication of her debut novel, 'Allura Cikin Ruwa' (A Needle in the Water). She is a leading figure in the 'littattafan soyayya' (love literature) genre of Northern Nigeria, where her stories center on Muslim women confronting marital, educational, and cultural challenges within Islamic frameworks. She has published over twenty novels, including bestsellers across Hausa-speaking regions. Her narratives portray educated female protagonists, such as doctors and lawyers, who pursue professional ambitions and romantic fulfillment while upholding religious devotion and family obligations. Some of her works, like 'Ki Yarda Da Ni' (Accept Me), have been adapted into films. As of 2024, she continues to mentor aspiring Arewa writers through workshops and online sessions, and her books have collectively sold over one million copies.
PERSONAL LIFE
Bilkisu Funtuwa is married and resides in purdah with her family in Funtua, Katsina State. Her husband provides financial assistance for the publication of her novels. She has children, and for them, she has arranged posthumous adaptations of her books into films to disseminate moral and educational messages. She engages with the outside world through frequent visitors and telephone interactions, which inform the themes in her novels, even though purdah restricts her public visibility and mobility.
