Barnabas Emordi

EARLY LIFE

Barnabas Emordi was born and raised in Lagos but hails from Asaba in Delta State. He grew up in a family that avidly watched films from Hollywood, Nollywood, and Bollywood. He and his brother saved stipends to rent videotapes and buy CDs from Alaba market. Watching The Shawshank Redemption sparked a deeper creative fascination with filmmaking, though he did not initially plan a career in it. He attended Dream Makers International College and later studied Pure Mathematics at Delta State University, Abraka, graduating in 2015. His mathematical background later proved useful in understanding lighting design, angles, and the physics of light.

CAREER

Barnabas Emordi pivoted to filmmaking in 2015. He initially had an interest in animation and operated puppetry for a TV show. His fascination with cinematography was sparked by a YouTube tutorial in late 2015, leading him to dedicate several years to intense self-learning. In early 2016, he worked as a camera assistant for a web series and later as a continuity manager for 'This Is It'. His first encounter with Niyi Akinmolayan was in 2016 as a production design intern for the short film project 'Room 315'. In 2017, he participated in a documentary training program funded by Niyi Akinmolayan, where he met Akay Mason, establishing a lasting professional relationship. His big break came as a camera operator on the 2019 film 'Elevator Baby', where he gained recognition for a notable shot. Emordi considers pre-production crucial, meticulously planning aspects like camera choice for projects like 'Lisabi' after script study and location visits. He admires American filmmaker Steven Spielberg and English cinematographer Roger Deakins. He led the Nigerian team for Netflix's original documentary series 'Stories of a Generation with Pope Francis'. His directorial debut is the film 'Wheels'. In 2021, he was named the highest-grossing Director of Photography in Nollywood. He is also an executive producer for the upcoming film 'Red Circle', set for global cinema release in June.

PERSONAL LIFE

Emordi lives in Lagos and describes himself as single on public profiles. He is an avid traveler and loves cycling. He views film as a genuine tool for advocacy and nation-building. He has spoken warmly about the strong support of his parents, who encouraged his career shift even when it diverged from his academic path. He keeps much of his private life out of the public eye. As a football enthusiast, he supports Real Madrid.

Barnabas Emordi is known for elevating Nollywood’s visual standards and pushing technical boundaries. He frequently collaborates with Anthill Studios and emphasizes preparation, research, and teamwork. He believes Nigerian films can become generational references and continues advocating for better equipment access and technical growth in the industry.
