Angela Wamai

Angela Wamai is a Kenyan filmmaker whose passion for storytelling bloomed in high school art classes, captivating classmates with vivid tales. Initially seeing filmmaking as distant due to underrepresentation, she studied mass communication at Daystar University. Her career began with KBC radio internships, script supervising on Makutano Junction, and producing KTN’s Art Scene. Honing skills in Cuba, she edited acclaimed works like No Simple Way Home and I Had to Bury Cucu. Debuting as director with Shimoni (2022), a nine-year labor exploring trauma, forgiveness, and humanizing hurt, Wamai drew from personal reflections on grudges and her brothers' influences. Raised Christian, she critiques community silence on abuse through minimalist narratives. Advocating for Kenyan cinema, she pushes for government support, affordable venues, and IP protection, believing empathy unlocks healing.
