Amandla Ebeye

EARLY LIFE

Amandla Ebeye (born Amanda Mike-Ebeye) was born on 30 April 1986 in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. She is from the Agbor tribe. Her father is from Agbor and worked as a biomedical engineer, while her mother, Princess Olufunmilayo Akinrinade, is Yoruba and works as a fashion designer specializing in wedding gowns. She grew up in a family of five (or six, including a half-sister) children and is the first child. She completed her primary and secondary education in the Agbor/Benin area (including time at Igbinedion Montessori and Private School in Benin City). She later studied at Benson Idahosa University in Benin City, Edo State, where she graduated with a degree in International Studies and Diplomacy around 2006–2007.

CAREER

Amandla began her career as a model in 2006 after being discovered by Apple House modelling agency in Benin City. Modelling jobs (including for Unity Bank, UBA and Emzor) brought her to Lagos. She made her acting debut in the film Weeping Tiger (2007/2008) alongside Jim Iyke. She rose to prominence with her role as a witty nurse in the television series Clinic Matters and through multiple appearances in Wale Adenuga’s Super Story. In a 2013 interview, Ebeye stated she could act unclad for $50 million. Her notable films include Weeping Tiger (2008), Clinic Matters (2009), Heat of the Moment (2009), Desire (2008), My Last Wedding (2009), Bursting Out (2010), 100% Secret (2012), Tongue (2014), It’s Her Day (2016), Inbred (2018), It’s a Crazy World, The Other Side (2021), Seeking Solace (2022), Finding Odera (2023), 30s Single and Bored, and Why Did I Marry You. She has also appeared in Everyday People, Tales of Women, The Evil Seed, Sorrowful Heart, Dangerous Angels, and many others. In 2018 she graduated as a director from Trebas Film Institute in Canada. She has since focused more on filmmaking, producing and directing her own projects. In April 2025 she launched her YouTube channel, Amandla Ebeye TV, where she releases her series and content aimed at mentoring young girls and promoting African identity.

PERSONAL LIFE

Amandla is a mother of two sons. She welcomed her first son, Chukwunyem, in Canada in 2016 while she was a single mother. She initially wasn't looking forward to having kids but now appreciates her son. Her mother remarried in 2016. She holds the opinion that pastors should stop deceiving people. She has spoken openly about not marrying the father of her first child, stating he was “not meant to be” her husband. She later married in a private registry wedding in Ikoyi, Lagos, in October 2021. She keeps her husband away from social media because she prefers to separate family life from her public career. The couple welcomed their second son, Oje, on 7 April 2024. She lives between Nigeria and Canada, travelling back and forth. In 2023, she officially changed her first name from Amanda (a Latin name meaning “loveable”) to Amandla, a Xhosa/Zulu word meaning “power.” She explained that the change was inspired by her desire to connect more deeply with her African roots and by Nelson Mandela’s anti-apartheid chant. She is pro-African and Afrocentric, and frequently speaks about self-love, cultural pride, and empowering young African girls.
