Biography
EARLY LIFE
Uzoamaka Audrey 'Amaka' Igwe was born on 2 January 1963 in Port-Harcourt, Nigeria. During her A-Levels at Idia College, Benin, she began to explore her creative side, teaching Atilogwu dance, competing nationally, and writing plays and songs. She studied Education/Religion at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and obtained a master's degree in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Ibadan. She spent her National Youth Service Corps as a travelling secretary for the Scripture Union.
CAREER
Amaka Igwe was a Nigerian filmmaker, writer, director, producer, and broadcasting executive. She was a visionary and pioneer of modern Nigerian TV and movie production. She gained prominence as the writer and producer of the award-winning TV soap ‘Checkmate’ (1991) and its offshoot ‘Fuji House of Commotion’. Her Nollywood projects include 'Rattle snake' (1995) and 'Violated' (1995). She founded BOBTV Exp., and was the founder and CEO of Top Radio 90.9FM station, Amaka Igwe Studios, Q Entertainment Networks, and a DSTV channel. She also directed the short celluloid film 'Barbers Wisdom'.
PERSONAL LIFE
Amaka Igwe died on 28 April 2014, at the age of 51 in Enugu, Nigeria. She was the sixth of seven children and the fourth of six sisters, raised in Enugu. Her films often featured feminist themes and addressed socio-cultural issues, challenging patriarchal traditions in Nigeria.
