Biography
EARLY LIFE
Adeoluwa Emmanuel Owu was born in 1985 in Ilorin, Kwara State. He hails from Kogi State and is of Yagba ethnic descent. He grew up in a middle-class Christian family; his parents (both school principals and deacons in a Baptist church) later settled in Satellite Town, Lagos, and raised him with strong discipline and principles. He initially enrolled at the University of Ilorin in 2004 to study Physics but left in his final year after realizing the course did not align with his passion for filmmaking. Seeking practical training, he approached veteran filmmaker Tunde Kelani around 2009. Following Kelani’s advice to formalize his skills, he enrolled at PEFTI Film Institute in Lagos, where he trained in filmmaking with a focus on cinematography, editing, and directing.

Adeoluwa Owu, widely known as Captain Degzy, is a prominent Nigerian film director, cinematographer, and producer. He is CEO and Creative Director of Degzy Films. Active since around 2011, he has built a reputation for visually strong storytelling, commercial success, and blending contemporary narratives with Nigerian cultural elements. He has worked with major local and international brands and productions, including CNN’s Parts Unknown (Anthony Bourdain), Beyoncé’s Black Is King, and the BBC. Cinematography highlights: He served as Director of Photography or cinematographer on numerous projects, including Netflix’s first Nigerian original series Far From Home (2022), Shanty Town (2023), Jagun Jagun (The Warrior) (2023 – earned an AMVCA Best Cinematography nomination), My Village People, Introducing the Kujus, This Lady Called Life, Oga Bolaji, and many others.
