Biography

EARLY LIFE

Adekunle Blue started as a visual artist. She holds a First Class Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Arts from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where she majored in Directing and Production Design. During her third year at UNILAG, she developed a passion for filmmaking and has been creating art through film ever since. After graduating, she pursued several masterclasses in filmmaking and completed a film study program in Art Direction at Ebony Life Creative Academy.

CAREER

In Nollywood, Adekunle Blue is recognized for her significant contributions to production design, visually bringing many stories to life. Her portfolio includes work in the Art and Production Design department for films such as La Femme Anjola, Blood Sisters, Elesin Oba, Love Language, and Now That We Are Married. She also served as the 1st Assistant Director for Brotherhood and Shuttlers. Adekunle Blue is a versatile filmmaker, extending her work beyond mainstream projects to independent ones, where she has directed short films like Safer Outside and Masquerade. She has also directed and served as Assistant Director and Art Director for brand commercials for clients including Spotify, Airtel, Mr Chef, Heirs Insurance, and GTB. Her directorial debut, the short film Man and Masquerades, earned her the Best Student Film award at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) Globe Award in 2023. In 2025, her film Ranti Ronu won the Best Storytelling award at the Ibadan Indie Film Awards (IFA). Her upcoming project, 'Ade Ori', slated for 2026, is a deeply personal story exploring themes of inheritance, identity, and the connection through hair.

PERSONAL LIFE

Adekunle Blue identifies primarily as a storyteller, with her main creative ambition being to exert greater control over the narrative process. She draws inspiration from the directorial styles of Jordan Peele, Kenneth Gyang, and BB Sasore. She has expressed her internal conflict regarding the ongoing societal challenges in Nigeria, stating, "Ranti is me, Ronu is also me. The desire to leave and the pull to stay both sit in my chest at the same time. Nigeria is loud, violent, beautiful, frustrating, and sacred to me."
